The hilly terrain of Cold Spring Harbor State Park offers scenic vistas over the waters of Cold Spring Harbor, and features a mixed hardwood forest as well as thickets of wild mountain laurel. The park is a popular destination for Long Islanders who are looking for a relatively short, but very stimulating, hike. .
Trails Overview:
The northern end of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail traverses the park along a narrow corridor from Trail View State Park. Use the Web Map link on this site to view the 1.14-mile segment, which features numbered trail markers and their associated GPS coordinates. Informal side trails, also identified on the map, add another three/quarter mile for hiking.

“When thinking about hiking on Long Island, most people envision flat, relatively monotonous terrain. Indeed, most hiking trails on Long Island are flat, or nearly so. But this hike is a notable exception. It is situated on the Harbor Hill glacial moraine, which features undulating terrain and some steep climbs and descents. In fact, this may be the most challenging hike (from the point of view of terrain) on Long Island.”
