Gobbler’s Knob State Forest
Park Overview:
A two-mile co-aligned segment of Shawangunk Ridge Trail and the Long Path traverses this state forest.
Park Description:
In 2005 the Open Space Conservancy -- the land acquisition affiliate of the Open Space Institute -- purchased this 306-acre tract from the Gobbler's Knob Sportsman's Club, which for many years had used the land as a hunting preserve for its members. The property is located on the western escarpment of the Shawangunk Ridge. Two streams traverse the parcel and empty into the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area to the north.
Now managed by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Gobbler’s Knob State Forest is home to numerous species, including rare dwarf pitch pine, scrub oak and northern hardwood hemlock forests and provides habitat for black bears, eagles and timber rattlesnakes.
Trails Overview:
The co-aligned Shawangunk Ridge Trail and the Long Path form a two-mile pathway through the length of the state forest and beyond it in both directions. Use the Web Map link on this site to view a map of the area.
- For a trail description of this segment see the online Long Path Guide, Section 11 starting at mile 7.95 heading north.
Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking and horseback riding are allowed within the property but there are no designated trails or maintained areas for these activities.
