Roosa Gap State Forest
Park Overview:
Stunning views from the Shawangunk Ridge while hiking along co-aligned long distance trails
Park Description:
Roosa Gap State Forest is in the middle of three state forests aligned south to north from Wurtsboro, and linked together by one marked hiking trail. Hikers will be treated to spectacular views of the surrounding valley.
A variety of wildlife can be found within the state forest, including game species, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Hunting is allowed in season.
Trails Overview:
Roosa Gap State Forest features a three-mile section of the co-aligned Shawangunk Ridge Trail (SRT) and the Long Path (LP). In addition to this hiking trail, there are approximately two miles of unmarked multiple use trails that branch off it. Use Web Map link on this site to view a trail map.
The 35-foot fire tower north of Roosa Gap, constructed in 1948, is officially open to the public according to the forester in charge. The chain-link fence is a leftover from the days when it was an emergency tower and an unlocked gate now provides access. The Long Path was recently moved so that it is now adjacent to the fire tower; the purpose of the relocation was to encourage hikers to climb the tower.
