Park Description:
Stephens State Park & Allamuchy Mountain State Park
Embracing most of the Allamuchy Mountain upland between County 517 and the Musconetcong River, and bisected by I-80 near Exit 19, Allamuchy Mountain and Stephens State Parks together comprise 9,200 acres. Stephens State Park has camping, fishing, and picnic facilities; Allamuchy Mountain State Park is more undeveloped and offers hunting and fishing opportunities. Waterloo Village, a restoration of Andover Forge and once a busy port along the Morris Canal, is situated in Allamuchy Mountain S.P.
Trails Overview:
Each of the three sections of these state parks has networks of hiking trails.
- The Allamuchy Natural Area around Deer Park Pond, south of I-80 has several marked trails that can be combined to form a variety of loop hikes.
- The developed area of Stephens State Park, east of Waterloo Road, offers several marked loop trails that begin from the park office, as well as a section of the Highlands Trail.
- The portion of Allamuchy Mountain State Park north of I-80 has a section of the Sussex Branch [rail] Trail, a 4.4-mile section of the Highlands Trail, and an extensive network of unmarked woods roads.
