Sunken Meadow State Park (Governor Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park)
Park Overview:
On Long Island Sound with a wide variety of flora and fauna.
Park Description:
The park takes its name from the low meadowland which separates the beach from the uplands. A man made dam separates a brackish creek and marshes from the tidal flats, south of which are acres of undeveloped and heavily wooded hills. The visitor can swim in Long Island Sound where three miles of beach meets tall, glacier formed bluffs at the west end of the shoreline. Activities include biking, horseback riding, picnicking, windsurfing, cross-country skiing, 27 holes of golf, a driving range, a putting range and a three-quarter mile boardwalk.
In undeveloped areas of the park dogs are permitted with a 6 foot leash. Not allowed in bathing or picnic areas, in buildings or on walkways. Pets cannot enter through the main entrance; use an entrance on Old Dock Road, off 25A East. Contact Park Office ("Contact Information" on this site).
Trails Overview:
The white-blazed Long Island Greenbelt Trail (Suffolk County Greenbelt Trail) has its northern terminus in the park -- at Field 3. Hikers on the Greenbelt Trail should stay on the trail to avoid eroding the tall bluffs, which offer views across the Long Island Sound to Connecticut. At low tide, it is possible to follow the shore below the bluffs for an easier route or as part of a loop hike from Sunken Meadow.
The park includes a wide boardwalk with ample parking and picnic areas.
Its beaches and breezy bluffs along the Sound are a refreshing place to take a summer hike, but for hiking it shines in the off-season.
